While the West Coast dominates the US wine scene, we aren’t the only game in town thanks to visionaries like Dr. Konstantin Frank. California had Andre Tchelistcheff, and the East Coast owes everything to Dr. Konstantin Frank, a Ukrainian immigrant who, when he immigrated to the US, had a vision for what the wine industry could become in the East. The cool climate, steep terrain, and good soil of New York’s Finger Lakes region caught Dr. Frank’s eye, and while he knew that many varietals might eventually thrive there, he would begin with Riesling. Thus began his plantings of the first Vinifera in the Eastern United States, 1958. His winery continues to set the pace for greatness in the Finger Lakes.
