Domaine de Majas was founded in 1992 by Alain and Agnès Carrère in the rugged hills of Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, where schist, volcanic stone, and limestone shape the vineyards. Carignan has always been the backbone, though like many in Roussillon, the family was pressured to plant Bordeaux grapes in the 1990s — a move that nearly sank the region’s reputation. When Alain inherited his father’s vines, he first tried selling locally, then signed a supermarket contract that demanded standardized, soulless wines at bulk prices so low the family was nearing bankruptcy. That’s when fate connected Alain with Tom Lubbe of Domaine Matassa; together they converted all 30 hectares to organics, cut out additives, and let their terroir speak. Today, Majas produces wines that are fresh, elegant, and expressive of place — a story of revival and proof that even in a region once dismissed, authenticity can shine.
