Bernkastel-Kues is the quintessential German riverside hamlet. I was lucky enough to visit for a few days in 2012 and taste some of the world’s best Rieslings. What an underrated grape, especially in the US! Mother Nature’s ingenious combination of searing acidity alongside natural sugars makes Riesling among the most fascinating varieties for most wine professionals to study and enjoy. Exceedingly easy to pair with foods, especially ones with a little heat, this wine is a real gem.
With a family history dating back to the early 1600s, the Thanisch Family easily earns its place in Germany wine history. For the past 4 generations it has been led by women, never a small feat in the wine world. Today, 11th generation Sofia Thanisch leads the charge.
